Modern casinos are designed like indoor amusement parks, with fountains, musical shows and elaborate themes to entice visitors to wager money. But even though casinos offer many distractions, they would not be viable without the billions of dollars in revenue generated by their gaming machines and other games of chance.
The majority of casinos offer a wide range of table games, including blackjack, poker, craps and roulette. Players place their bets on tables that are usually designed specifically for the game being played. A croupier or dealer enables the games and manages payments. Casinos also earn money through a commission on winning bets, known as the rake.
While casinos rely on luck and chance, they also try to maintain a high level of security. Something about gambling seems to encourage people to cheat or scam, and casinos spend a great deal of time and money on security. In addition to video cameras, most casinos use other technological means of surveillance and control. For example, chip tracking systems enable casinos to monitor the amount of money wagered minute-by-minute, and electronic sensors alert the croupiers when the odds have changed.
