Poker is a card game in which the highest hand wins. The cards are dealt from a standard deck of 52 cards, and in most variations there are four suits (spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs). Some games also include wild cards or jokers.

The game is played in rounds, with players betting each other as the hand progresses. The player with the best 5-card hand at the end of the round wins the “pot” – all the money that has been raised during the hand. Players can fold if they don’t want to bet or their hand isn’t good.

Before the deal begins, each player puts up an amount of money into the pot. This is known as the ante. Some games have blind bets as well, which happen before the ante. Players can call the blind bet, raise it, or check (announcing this isn’t always necessary since many players use non-verbal signals such as tapping the table).

After the antes and blinds are placed, each player gets 2 cards face down. These are called a player’s hole or pocket cards and are hidden from the other players. The first betting round begins with the player to the left of the big blind. Then 3 cards are revealed in the center of the table, and another betting round begins.

Bluffing is a part of the game, but it’s important to understand relative hand strength before trying to bluff. For example, a pair of kings isn’t bad off the deal but an ace on the flop spells trouble for them.
